March Madness

March Madness is the concentrated hype of 68 teams
vying for college basketball's biggest prize.

March Madness is arguably the best time of the year. People from all over the country rooting for their schools, favorite teams, upsets, buzzer beaters or just watching
as a casual fan. It's the chaos that gives the tournament its March Madness nickname. Approximately, 40 million people fill out a bracket each year and it would not surprise
me if it was even more.

March Madness is a phenomenon that grips the national sports psyche from the second week of March through the first week of April. March Madness is the moniker that is given to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments. These tournaments determine the national champions of college basketball.

These next couple days will be college basketball games, all day long. So, when
you're sitting on the couch eating and drinking what better way to add to your
drink then some Früzen Ice.

We have a variety of ices that add something creative to your beer or cocktails to make it more unique and enjoyable. The frozen fruit, vegetables, and candy keeps drinks refreshing, while providing you or your guests with the excitement of waiting for it to melt. It is beautifully crafted with the fruit, vegetables and candy in the middle of the ice.

Hopefully you will enjoy our lovely ice while sitting back and enjoying the Madness
that is March. This is an exciting time of year with spring here so why not
add some Früzen Ice to your cocktails. We know you will enjoy it, we sure do!

Mixology Monday Recovery Guide

Rather than creating a Mixology Monday cocktail, we're dedicating this post-St. Patrick's Day Monday to getting you back on your feet. We're compiling a list of some of the most successful hangover tonics!

Liquid Liftoff:

Water: Before you go popping Aleve, Advil, or Tylenol we suggest you try some water to get that headache simmering down. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so try water first and foremost!

Juice: Any fruit juice can be the trick, but we prefer to go with Cranberry juice. Cranberry acts as a natural detox and replenishes those sugars and electrolytes that Alcohol is known for killing. For a better result take our Früzen Cranberry Ice with water for an outstanding effect.

Chamomile: By now chamomile tea should be a part of your daily diet. It calms you down and is the perfect aid for natural sleep. Chamomile not only calms your mind, but your stomach! The next time your kissing porcelain, make it a teacup full of Chamomile!

Ginseng: All over the city you can find Ginseng beverages. Next time you're thinking coffee for a hangover, try ginseng. Coffee is actually a diuretic like alcohol, making dehydration worse, but ginseng is the herbal equivalent!

Nom Nom Nourishment:

Bananas: Potassium in this fruit will help relieve nausea or cramps that have been associated with hangovers forever. If you're like us and don't like mushy-mushy that bananas tend to have, throw them in a blender with some yogurt and Früzen Strawberry Ice for a delicious smoothy!

Beans on Toast: Personally, we've never tried this, but friends have told us this is a miracle when it comes to hangovers. The fiber and folic acid found in beans, combined with proteins, combat your negative energy and aid your recovery.

Pickles: It is not necessarily the pickle that cures the hangover, more so it's the pickle juice which has a high amount of sodium and vinegar. The shock of sodium to your body will simply rush all of your fluids into your body, re-hydrating you. Double fist those pickles and you'll be feeling better in no time!

Quinoa: This is a miracle-grain that was first cultivated by the Incas over 3000 years ago! Quinoa was forgotten by most, but has recently regained popularity throughout the country. This nutrient-packed super-grain is filled with vitamins and amino acids that will have you back on your feet!

Asparagus: Asparagus is packed with amino acids and antioxidants that wash over that hangover. Don't mind the smell of your urine, it's way better than your vom!

Chemical Concoction:

Alka-Seltzer: We prefer you try the natural remedies first, but if you can't seem to get over your hangover, try Alka-Seltzer. This brand has a specific "morning relief" that attacks your hangover, but any kind will do. Alka-Seltzer contains sodium bicarbonate, which neutralizes stomach acid, and aspirin that tackles your headaches. This is a cure-all for hangovers. "Pop pop, fiz fiz, oh what a relief it is" never seemed so true.

If none of these things worked, try a glass full of our Früzen Ice cubes to brighten your days!
After all, mind over matter!

We hope you enjoyed this special edition of Mixology Mondays, and may your recovery be swift!

Celebrating St. Patty's Day at Home

If you’re looking to avoid the insane bar crowds on St. Patty’s Day, perhaps you should consider staying in and throwing a St. Patrick’s Day party. You will be able to save a few hard earned bucks and can be a more convenient way to indulge in this Irish holiday! Here’s a list of our St. Patrick’s Day party must-haves for home:

Appetizers

A Leprechaun Spiral

In a large skillet, bring 1/2 in. of water to a boil; add asparagus. Reduce heat;
cover and simmer for 2 minutes. Drain and immediately place asparagus in ice water;
drain and pat dry.
Wrap a slice of ham around each asparagus spear. Unroll breadstick dough; spread with garlic spread. Cut each breadstick in half lengthwise. Wrap one piece of dough,
garlic spread side out, around each ham-wrapped asparagus spear.
Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375° for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately. Yield: 20 appetizers.

Irish Grilled Cheese

Mash 4 tablespoons softened butter with 2 tablespoons each chopped parsley, scallions and chives. Spread the mixture on 4 slices white bread; top each with sliced Irish cheddar cheese and bread-and-butter pickles. Cover with 4 more bread slices. Spread plain butter on the outside of the sandwiches and fry in a skillet until golden on both sides. Spread the remaining herb butter on the warm sandwiches. Slice into quarters, then press the cut sides in more chopped herbs.

Shamrock Chips and Dip

With shamrock cookie cutter, cut out as many shamrocks as possible from spinach tortillas.
*Sometimes the cookie cutter will not cut all the way through the tortilla. To get a better cut, push the cookie cutter down firmly and move the entire tortilla back and forth while pressing. For those stubborn edges that will not cut, use cooking scissors.
Place on baking sheet. Spray shamrocks with cooking oil. Sprinkle with salt. Bake at 375 degrees for about 7 - 10 minutes. Check often, they burn quickly.
Serve with your favorite dip.

Drinks with Früzen Ice

The Naughty Leprechaun

1 oz of tequila
Lime margarita mix
1 Corona (upside down)
Serve with Früzen Jalapeño Ice
Mix tequila and margarita mix. Salt rim of a large glass and pour mixture in. Take the bottle of Corona and flip it upside down into the glass. Add in Früzen Jalapeño Ice and enjoy!

MintMadness Mojito

10 fresh mint leaves
1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
1 1/2 fluid ounces white rum
1/2 cup club soda
Serve with Früzen Mint Ice
Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with Früzen Mint Ice. Pour the rum over the mint ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.

Decorations

St. Patrick's Day Banner

You'll need:
String
 Old book pages
Buttons
Stapler
Green card stock
Glue or other adhesive

Here's how you'll put it together:

1. Using your book pages cut out 5 (or however many you'd like) rectangles approximately 3.5" x 6" in size.
2. Snip out a triangle shape from the bottom of your rectangles. Hint: From left to right, find the center of your rectangle then measure approximately 1 3/4 " from the bottom to find where the top point of your triangle will be.
3. Cut out the number of shamrocks you'll need from green cardstock. I used the stained glass image HERE as my template.
4.  Attach shamrock's to your banner pieces being sure to allow enough room to fold over the top edges. Place a button in the center of each shamrock.
5. Now you're ready to put your banner together. Simply cut your length of string and attach banner pieces to string by folding top edge of banner pieces over the string & staple. Space banner pieces evenly along the string by sliding them back and forth as needed.
6. Now hang that cutie up somewhere and enjoy your new {oh so simple}
St. Patty's Day decor.

St. Patrick's Day Flowers

You'll need:
Several white carnations
Liquid green food coloring
Clear vase
Green and white tissue paper
Clear plastic wrap
Green ribbon
Clear tape
Hope everyone enjoys our list of must-haves at your St. Patty's house party. This list is the key ingredient to a successful and enjoyable St. Patty's day. We wish all of you a Happy St. Patrick's Day! Be safe and chill responsibly. Who knows maybe you will find a pot of gold.

St. Patty's Day 2013

St. Patty's Day is almost here

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, the saint's religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. It is named after Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. The day generally involves public parades, festivals and wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day.
No St. Patty’s Day in NYC would be complete without staking out a spot at this parade, which makes its 252nd march. The parade goes up 5th Avenue from 44th to 79th Streets. The first official St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City was held in 1766 by Irish military men serving in the American colonies. Despite not allowing floats, autos or exhibits, there are over 150,000 marchers every year. Often regarded as the most popular parade in New York City, the St. Patrick's Day Parade is not to be missed.
The Parade will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2013 starting at 11 a.m. The parade takes place on March 17, except when March 17 falls on a Sunday(as it does in 2013), and then it is held on Saturday. Toward the north end of the St. Patrick's Day Parade route are the best viewing spots if you want to avoid the crowds that throng the sidewalks below 59th Street. The Parade ends at 79th Street, around 2 or 3 p.m. Keep in mind that the grandstands are located between 62nd and 64th Streets, so that area is accessible only with a ticket, but if you score a spot close to the grandstands, you might be able to see the marchers performing for the judges. The crowd is densest at St. Patrick's Cathedral and in the area immediately around there and tends to lessen as you move north along the parade route.

Thousands of colorful drunks roam the city every year during the world's largest St. Patrick's Day pub crawl. It's 3 days, 5 miles, and more than 100 pubs. You'll get $1 domestic drafts, $3 well drinks, and $4 Jameson shots wherever you roam. Each pub will also offer their own drink specials, theme parties, and other shenanigans. Tickets are $10 for one day of crawling, $40 for an all-access, three-day pass (March 16-18). If you are looking to bar hop and enjoy a day of drinking with friends this is the perfect event for you. For more information or to purchase tickets you can visit this link:

If none of this is for you and you want to spend St. Patrick's Day at home, try The Chilly Leprechaun, a St. Patrick's Day-inspired cocktail for our Mixology Monday.

2 oz. Clear Rum
.5 oz. Midori (melon liqueur)
1 oz. lime juice
Fresh mint muddled
1 oz. soda water
Serve with Früzen Mint ice cubes

It's made with Clear rum, splash of Midori (melon liqueur), lime juice, fresh mint muddled, and topped off with soda water.  Obviously poured over our Fruzen Mint ice cubes. Perfect drink to start off your St. Patrick's Day weekend.

National Absinthe Day 2013

National Absinthe Day is tomorrow, March 4 2013...

Absinthe takes its name from Artemisia absinthium, which comes from the botanical name for wormwood (the staple ingredient for absinthe). Absinthe was created, like most alcohols, as a medical cure-all in 18th century Switzerland that spread quickly into France. In Paris, the drink became most fashionable among the Bourgeoisie as 5pm to 7pm matured into "l'heure verte", the Green Hour. Almost everyone was fascinated with the Absinthe; Manet, Van Gogh, and Picasso all obsessed over it in their art. There are many stories recounting the psychoactive properties of Absinthe, mostly correlated with "la fée verte", The Green Fairy. Causing many to "lose their minds" and others hospitalized.   Absinthe was soon banned in the United States, Switzerland and France.

A 19th-century absinthe advertisement

Traditionally the liquor was infused with 'thujone', the mind-altering molecule that is most associated with Absinthe. However, in the US, absinthe is now distributed legally so long as it doesn't contain any traces of thujone. Absinthe in commonly prepared by dripping the liquor over a sugar cube into the glass.

Yes, you can obtain Absinthe legally!
We at Früzen Ice, always recommend for you to chill responsibly. With that being said we dare you to give it a try, Absinthe will NOT cause you to hallucinate.

In light of National Absinthe Day, we've concocted an Absinthe-inspired cocktail
for our Mixology Monday

The Früzen Fairy

3 Früzen Blackberries
3 fresh blackberries
1 mint sprig
¾ ounce absinthe
¾ ounce rye whiskey
¾ ounce fresh lemon juice
¾ ounce tonic water

Take the fresh blackberries and muddle with a mint sprig. Then, add the absinthe, rye whiskey, lemon juice, and tonic water. Fill the shaker with regular ice, and shake well. Strain the drink over a glass filled with our Früzen Blackberries and enjoy. Perfect for a late Sunday Brunch with your friends.
