St. Patty's Day is almost here
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, the saint's religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. It is named after Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. The day generally involves public parades, festivals and wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day.
No St. Patty’s Day in NYC would be complete without staking out a spot at this parade, which makes its 252nd march. The parade
goes up 5th Avenue from 44th to 79th Streets. The first official St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City was held in
1766 by Irish military men serving in the American colonies. Despite not allowing
floats, autos or exhibits, there are over 150,000 marchers every year. Often regarded as the most popular parade in New York City, the St. Patrick's Day Parade is not to be missed.
The Parade will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2013 starting at 11 a.m. The parade takes place on March 17, except when March 17 falls on a Sunday(as it does in 2013), and then it is held on Saturday. Toward the north end of the St. Patrick's Day Parade route are the best viewing spots if you want to avoid the crowds that throng the sidewalks below 59th Street. The Parade ends at 79th Street, around 2 or 3 p.m. Keep in mind that the grandstands are located between 62nd and 64th Streets, so that area is accessible only with a ticket, but if you score a spot close to the grandstands, you might be able to see the marchers performing for the judges. The crowd is densest at St. Patrick's Cathedral and in the area immediately around there and tends to lessen as you move north along the parade route.
Thousands of colorful drunks roam the city every year during the world's largest St. Patrick's Day pub crawl. It's 3 days, 5 miles, and more than 100 pubs. You'll get $1 domestic drafts, $3 well drinks, and $4 Jameson shots wherever you roam. Each pub will also offer their own drink specials, theme parties, and other shenanigans. Tickets are $10 for one day of crawling, $40 for an all-access, three-day pass (March 16-18). If you are looking to bar hop and enjoy a day of drinking with friends this is the perfect event for you.
